Where is everyone?

Difference between version 19 and 20 - Previous - Next
Once upon a time this wiki was so active, a lot of teclers used to exchange ideas and code. And now, nothing. Where is everyone? Where is Larry Virden? Don't tell me they all moved to Python! :-)

I still check the pages daily but make less frequent posts because fewer people appear to be interested in the contributions that I make. Besides, for many of the tasks and queries that might come to mind, my first port of call nowadays is Stackoverflow. And, I guess for many noobs Rosetta Code is a good alternative plus, of course, the excellent online Tcl tutorials.

I do however, miss the richer 'community' feel of the 'old days' when you just waited for some of the Tcl panditas (esp RS) to add a page or comment which was a delight.

Maybe because they are all using lambdatalk http://lambdaway.free.fr/.

Just kidding :) I discover your wiki and love it.

People are still about, but the wiki appears less frenetic these days because minor edits are not normally shown on the Recent Changes page.

[JM] I love this wiki, and I visit it too often -daily- to see if there is something new I must admit.
Then I use to read again some of the golden oldies pages ;-)

This wiki has been hugely helpful for me, though I'm not a good contributor. And I check the Recent Changes all the time :-)

I've noted that a number of things were not copied over from
the original wiki. Either that or the search mechanism is not turning up information that was once posted. Either makes the wiki
a little less relevant for me. I still haunt the periphery, though. Edit: after saying this, I thought that I would dig a bit deeper. The content that I thought might not be there actually is (though I was only searching for a few things that I had
made some edits on long ago): I had to click around to find it. The issue appears to be with the search tool?

[JM] you are correct, I think it is the search tool<<br>>
If you try to find this very same page, the search tool won't find it ;)

Most of the times, I have to use:
 RS site:wiki.tcl-lang.org
from google

Yes, I have to echo the issue with the search function. I dearly miss the ability to search in-site. It is really cumbersome for searches to direct to another website. Can this be fixed?

the current wiki is still compatible with old (<=2009) weblinks. An experimental http://notab.tk/ida.htm.html%|%page%|% once provided ahead completions of title words, it is still alive - the user interface needs getting used to -. Maybe this helps to find old content hidden in the wiki. Then since this year the wiki's maintainer published the page title index named sitemap.xml.

Whereas the search function as is doesn't bother me at all, if you're going to write an
embedded search, I recommend using https://sphinxsearch.com/%|%Sphinx Search%|% . This
engine worked out very well for me when I built Apress Access.
'''[ALX] - 2019-12-23 11:23'''

What is good is that on the Recent Changes Page you can see a longer period. Another good thing is that the wiki has a more modern look. On the other hand, I also think that a problem is the search. If I entered "ALX" in the search in the old wiki, my homepage was shown directly. With the current search function it is not shown at all. Who is actually responsible for the Wiki code?
