[Lars H], 2009-02-03: One thing the anonymous "wikigardener" seems to have missed is that categories generally don't fall into a strict hierarchical scheme (as the new text above would suggest), but more often end up being '''related to''' each other. Traditionally such related-to links have been found as bulleted lists under a heading such as '''See also''', whereas only the category-hierarchical links have been put in the category footer.

The good thing about categories is that they are '''not''' hierarchical, a page can be ''in'' several categories, and may ''reference'' other categories within the body of the page, either in a list or inline in the text. Also, there is no "list of all categories" except the one generated automatically by clicking on the title of this page. I think the partial list on [How do Wiki Categories work] is only justified as a reference to help decide what categories are appropriate when it is not obvious from the category name. And I don't think there is any right order for the categories at the bottom of a page - alphabetical might be a sensible choice, but I think it depends.
