A part of [Google Summer of Code]. ---- If Tcl/Tk's application to Google's Summer of Code will be accepted, as an author and submitter, I think that it should be reviewed and corrected. As I've written it several times I've done what I could to meet the deadline. ---- Here is original application text: ----- '''1. What is your Organization's Name?''' Tcl Developer Xchange/Community '''2. What is your Organization's Homepage?''' http://tcl.tk/ '''3. Describe your organization.''' Tcl Developer Xchange is a primary website for many thousands of software developers who are already more productive with help from the Tcl programming language and the Tk graphical user interface toolkit. The development of the open source Tcl core, including the Tcl scripting language, the Tk toolkit, the Tcl Developer Exchange Web site is collectively managed by the The Tcl Core Team (TCT), a group of Tcl experts. The TCT and Tcl/Tk Comunity organizes its activities with Tcl Improvement Proposals (TIPs), Tcler's Wiki - http://wiki.tcl.tk, USNET news:comp.lang.tcl group, Tcl/Tk Chats and IRC channel and SourceForge.net tools. '''4. Why is your organization applying to participate in GSoC 2007? What do you hope to gain by participating?''' GSoC 2007 gives opportunity to expose Tcl/Tk to young programming talents among students so they can get involved with Tcl/Tk by not only using the Tcl language but also digging into Tcl internals. Tcl code base is very mature and clean so working with it is excellent exercise to enhance developer skills. We are convinced that there are quite a few improvements that could be contributed by a motivated student. '''5. Did your organization participate in GSoC 2005 or 2006? If so, please summarize your involvement and the sucesses and failures of your student projects. (optional)''' No '''6. If your organization has not previously participated in GSoC, have you applied in the past? If so, for what year(s)? (optional)''' No '''7. What license does your project use?''' Tcl uses a BSD-style open source license: Tcl/Tk license - http://www.tcl.tk/software/tcltk/license.html '''8. URL for your ideas page''' http://wiki.tcl.tk/17872 '''9. What is the main development mailing list for your organization?''' tcl-core@lists.sourceforge.net. '''10. Where is the main IRC channel for your organization?''' Freenode (meta-server: irc.freenode.net), #tcl (contains bots ircbridge and ijchain, which bridge to other chat systems hosting the Tcler's Chat). Probably the best area for Tcl-related chat. '''11. Does your organization have an application template you would like to see students use? If so, please provide it now. (optional)''' Students should send us (to administrator or chosen mentor) their contact information, resume and technical proposals. Technical proposals for inclusion in the Tcl/Tk core should be in TIP format (TIP stands for Tcl Improvement Proposal described at http://tip.tcl.tk/) or something similar to it. See TIP #2[http://tip.tcl.tk/2.html] for a description of the editorial process a TIP has to go through and TIP #3[http://tip.tcl.tk/3.html] for a description of their structure and the commands used to write them (the format is very similar to Wiki-format). '''12. Who will be your backup organization administrator? Please enter their Google Account address. We will email them to confirm, your organization will not become active until they respond. (optional)''' EMPTY About Your Mentors '''1. What criteria did you use to select these individuals as mentors? Please be as specific as possible.''' Our mentors will be self-selected, having an interest in particular features developed, and an interest/need in providing summer opportunities for students. They will consult with Tcl Core Team members and respected Tcl users/developers to help students make good technical decision and achieve the goals beneficial for the Tcl community. '''2. Who will your mentors be? Please enter their Google Account address separated by commas. If your organization is accepted we will email each mentor to invite them to take part. (optional)''' EMPTY About The Program '''1. What is your plan for dealing with disappearing students?''' First choose candidates capable of completing given task and with strong motivation. It would be mentors obligation to be in touch with student, monitoring work progress and helping to conduct the project. If a student quits mentor should have a candidate or try to find backup student developer who can continue started work. '''2. What is your plan for dealing with disappearing mentors?''' Mentors and student will publish their details of their progress preferably on the created project blog. If there will be no progress signs other mentors will step in as backup mentors, or some help will be given directly from Tcl Core Team members or other community members through the tcl-core mailing list (listed above). '''3. What steps will you take to encourage students to interact with your project's community before, during and after the program?''' This is mentor responsibility to introduce a student to the community and the project (if it's not already done). Reporting progress to the community will create feedback and we are convinced that it will encourage/oblige students to interact. '''4. What will you do to ensure that your accepted students stick with the project after GSoC concludes?''' We believe that students who will complete the projects find it reasonable to continue collaboration on other Tcl related projects as the best way to enhance its programming skills and build its resume. ''authored and submitted by [tkosiak] somehow based on OpenACS application draft at http://openacs.org/forums/message-view?message%5fid=595753'' ----- Please place corrected version below: ---- '''1. What is your Organization's Name?''' Tcl/Tk Community '''2. What is your Organization's Homepage?''' http://www.tcl.tk/ '''8. URL for your ideas page''' http://purl.org/tcl/GSoC2007/ideas -> http://wiki.tcl.tk/17875 '''12. Who will be your backup organization administrator? Please enter their Google Account address. We will email them to confirm, your organization will not become active until they respond. (optional)''' Jeff Hobbs ----- Here is a place for discussion ----- [tkosiak] First we should probably correct our organization name. It would be probably better named Tcl/Tk Community or Tcl/Tk Project. [DKF]: I can volunteer to handle being a backup mentor of last resort. However, it is very unlikely that I will be able to meet with students (unless they're willing to travel to where I am located!) so my focus would have to be on getting them another mentor more suitable to their location. On a less formal note, I'd always be happy to discuss technical aspects of Tcl/Tk with students on the chat (whether they're using IRC or not; I'm not prejudiced that way.) <>Category Community|Category Discussion
