Here's a program called MP - Monitor [puts] and it's like this:

It does perform quite well.  If you click on that arrow, you can expand this box ([http://www.geocities.ws/thezipguy/mytcldesktop/framed.png]), which contains information, and it looks like this after you click on the button:

It is relatively simple, and achieves the desired result.

What you can do is hit the the buttons whenever you like; and it will say something,
to stdout, including date and time, and they will show up the screen, because the've been captured.
