Version 1 of embedded

Updated 2002-09-24 17:06:01

The term embedded is typically used when talking about software hidden within a hardware appliance in a manner not normally seen.

Software within your television, VCR, CD, MP3, DVD players, microwave, or router are all examples of some degree of embedding.

Tcl is frequently used for embedded systems.

[Someone please add pointers to examples where Tcl is embedded]

For example, the personal digital video recorder system TiVO has Tcl embedded. In fact, here's a project relating to that product.

 What: Tivo Web Project
 Where: http://tivo.lightn.org/
        http://tivo.sf.net/
Description: The latest branch of this project is written entirely in Tcl.
It runs on the TiVo and works only with the TiVo 2.0 series
software. It provides the ability to browse the entire channel
guide, schedule and delete recordings via software, and requires only
a TCP/IP connection to your TiVo.
        Currently at version 1.9.3 .
